What is Steven Universe?

Steven Universe is a children's cartoon made in 2013 by Rebecca Sugar, and was aired on Cartoon Network. It follows the protagonist Steven who is half gem, half human fighting with his gem family to protect the Earth. Then there was a movie made in 2019 that is a sequel to the TV show, and the latest release is Steven Universe: Future which is an epilogue which aired in 2019 aswell. There is going to be a spin off that follows a side character's adventure in space called Lars of the Stars, sadly there is no set release date D: but! it is currently being worked on, so hopefully it will come soon!

The Creators

If you like Adventure Time, OK K.O., and other shows like that, you will definitely like Steven Universe! Rebecca Sugar wrote many songs and episodes of Adventure Time, and Ian Quartey-Jones (who is also Rebecca Sugar's husband) is the creator of OK K.O.. And they are the main creators of Steven Universe! The creators have also paved the way for other Cartoon Network shows to have LGBTQ+ themes because Rebecca Sugar fought for a same-sex wedding before that was fully accepted, and she refused to let the higher-ups take it out, so much so that she hid the couple from the network until she made it impossible for the episode of their wedding to not be aired. Thankfully now, and I personally think Rebecca has a big part in this, CN is much more accepting now of those themes. "I love you Rebecca Sugar!!!" we all say in unison.

sadly, they were still forced to make one of them wear a suit, but they made sure it was the feminine gem to tell their audience this is still a lesbian couple.

My Opinion

Words cannot express how much I love this series. This show has made me go through so many emotions watching it. I have never gotten this obsessed over a series or characters. Like I have been obsessed over games and youtubers and etc but nothing has ever made me lose sleep because I would stay up just thinking about the show multiple nights in a row. Even if you dont think the show will interest you, the SOUNDTRACK!! ITS SO GOOD!!! It's so beautiful and there's so many talented voice actors that can sing wonderfully!! As someone with a mental illness thats only portrayed when it's super extreme or romanticized, I related to a character that was experiencing exactly what i was going through and it genuinely broke me. I have cried every single day since I finished the series recently (its been almost a week) because of how I thought there was no one with my experience then seeing it being represented in the show, it made me realize things about myself and I felt seen. I think it made me grow a special connection to the show and the character. Rebecca Sugar is such a wonderful song-writer and singer. Even when I was a kid watching the show on Cartoon Network all out of order, I still loved it. My whole family loved it too, and watching it again was eye-opening.


Convincing You

I genuinely think Steven Universe is a top 10 cartoon ever. From the story-line, to the soundtrack it is just so beautifully crafted. It starts off silly like any other cartoon, but then it becomes a wonderful story that has you invested in the characters and wanting more. The character development and world-building is insane for a children's cartoon. Obviously, if your racist or homophobic you aren't going to like it, but no one cares about you. Please please please I beg of you give it a shot, watch the first season. The community is dying with 7 years of no content but it's so worth getting into. We are welcoming and I want more fan art and animations!!!!!!!
